Critical Path

The critical path is the longest chain of dependent tasks in a schedule — the sequence where, if any single task slips, the job's finish date slips with it. Tasks not on the critical path have slack (float): they can run late by some amount without pushing the end date. Tasks on the critical path have none. Knowing which tasks are actually on that path is what separates real schedule management from just watching a calendar.

Why a lot of "critical paths" aren't real

A critical path is only meaningful if the dependencies behind it are real — this task genuinely can't start until that one finishes. When a schedule gets built by hand in a generic Gantt tool, dependencies are often typed in loosely or skipped, which means the "critical path" the software highlights is really just whatever's on the longest visual bar, not a mathematically determined sequence. A decorative critical path looks the same as a real one until a task actually slips and the finish date doesn't move the way the schedule said it would.
